Woodlands

A new garden for a design-led couple who have recently completed their dream home.

They wanted a garden that could relate to the strong architecture of the house, but also the broader landscape - an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Views from the building’s picture windows were vital and we thought carefully about materials and how they would work with the meticulous detailing of the house.
The strong lines of the architecture became the guiding principles for the garden; window layouts re-emerged as jumbo planters, and grid lines found their way into the detailing of the paving.

A mix of loose and floriferous perennials and grasses in a palette of blues, limes and purples are the perfect foil to the weight of the corten beds. A shallow water bowl catches the light and shadows of neighbouring planting.

Trees were selected to offer a long-season of interest to clients and wildlife - four roof trained crab apples create a dappled pergola outside the gaden studio.

The more structured planting gives way to a newly sown meadow which bleeds happily into the landscape beyond.
